The Hidden Weekend Arts

Photos: Everett Bogue

With its lordly presentation and capacious page count, the New York Times' "Weekend Arts" section is designed for big newspaper experiences. No paper in the city delivers so many versions of awesome under one roof: walking tours of the city, floor-to-ceiling movie reviews, French painters in retrospect, with a Will Shortz crossword and a Kakutani review thrown in.

And yet, surely no New York newspaper section packs such a wealth of eye-catching minutiae. In such vivid but peripheral images like the pull quote or shapely young starlet on E1 we sense the editors' intimacy with their subjects, and we feel our own connection to the paper itself. How close we can physically get to such details can, of course, be limited by how close we can hold the newspaper to our face. And then theres the matter of concentration: 30 pages of arts coverage even in the news-barren dog days of August tends to overwhelm our attention.

This is where the camera becomes an invaluable tool, a second set of eyes, sharp-focused and guiding us to what we might otherwise not see. Everett Bogue, Vulture's photo editor, recently embarked on a survey in close-up of today's "Weekend Arts" section and revealed a second newspaper hidden in plain sight within the first: a treasury of particulars. In these late summer weeks we invite you to follow him on his gallery travels and offer a challenge: to find the larger works from which Mr. Bogue singled out these fragments. In the process youre likely to learn what summer-desperate newspaper editors have always known: any idea, no matter how goofy, can be stretched into a popular recurring feature. Small isnt small after all.

Finnish minimalist techno group Pan sonic are among the most active and well-known artists from that country's midget experimental techno resistance, and the offset to reach clap at an international level. Pursuing the scraggy edges of minimal techno and hard-core, the grouping have earned an abiding association with industrial and disturbance medicine through their incorporation of antiseptic production techniques and power tool electronics, landing them in 1995 on the English Mute label's experimental subsidiary company Blast First! (most of their catalog to date has since appeared there). The affinity lay more at the surface, however, as Pan sonic are better understood as a hit 'tween Jeff Mills and Mike Ink; dance-based electronic music with a maximum of impact, realised through a minimum of foreign item. Known for junking together studio apartment equipment from spare parts and ancient analogue rubble, Pan sonic's search for the untested in techno is their compositional M.O., placing them closer to the music's Detroit roots than is much understood.

Formed in Turku in the early '90s, Pan sonic began as the duet of Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen. As with most Finnish techno groups, Pan sonic's earlier beginnings lay with the Sahko/Puu imprint, the focus of the Northern European techno scenery and home to such artists as Kirlian, Philus, Ø (Vainio's solo guise), Mono Junk, and Jimi Tenor. Pan sonic released its self-titled debut single through Sahko in 1994 earlier organism joined by third member Sami Salo and landing a narrow with Blast First! the following class. The group's first BF! acquittance, Vakio, was a full-length CD/triple-10" boxed typeset featuring the same brand of furtive, passively aggressive techno, though with a fuller, more thought-out well-grounded. Soon afterwards Vakio's release in 1995, Salo left the group (ostensibly to join the Army), and Pan sonic's subsequent releases -- the Osasto EP and the group's 1997 sophomore long-player, Kulma -- noted his absence by their relatively harder, less subtle tone.

Pan transonic added live carrying out to their regular repertoire in 1996, playing a number of gigs throughout Europe and Japan, as well as touring with gothic rock group the Swans. Vainio stirred to London in 1997, where, in improver to his chronic commitment to Pan sonic, he continues to record as Ø (his third base full-length under that name, Olento, was issued on Sahko precisely prior to Kulma's release). He has besides released work on Sahko, Puu, and Cheap as Tekonivel, Orchestra Guacamole (with Jaakko Salovaara), and Kosmos (with Jimi Tenor), as good as remixed tracks for Björk and Tactile. Pan sonic have besides been featured on several compiling albums, including A Fault in the Nothing (Contact, 1996) and Funktion 1: Finnish Techno Collection (Function, 1996). By 1998, an inevitable confrontation with the Japanese fabrication giant besides known as Pan sonic had resulted in a name-change of sorts, to Pan sonic. The wanting letter re-surfaced the following twelvemonth, as the title of the duo's third album. Vainio and Väisänen besides recorded the Endless LP (as VVV) with the addition of Suicide vocaliser Alan Vega. In 2001, Pan sonic returned with Aaltopiiri, toured the world, and then returned with a four-disc record album, Kesto (234.48:4), in 2004.

Sex Pistols hint at new album after Isle of Wight appearance

Isle of Wight Festival 2008 headliners Sex Pistols have hinted that they are working on a new album.

Speaking to BBC 6Music, frontman John Lydon wouldn't give a definite answer about rumours that the band were set to head to the studio, but hinted that they were considering an album of new material.

"It's a nice rumour [that the band will record another album] and it might possibly be true we are attempting to," he said. "It's like all things Sex Pistols it's riddled in chaos.

"You know, who knows what the future will hold? Maybe no future. So far I've proved that wrong. I've got a splendid future."

The Streets to split after fifth album

Mike Skinner has revealed that the fifth Streets album will be their last.

In a posting on his MySpace blog, Skinner noted that the group's upcoming LP - their fourth - would be titled Everything Is Borrowed and would have a "peaceful, positive vibe" in comparison with 2006's The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living.

He explained: "If you like The Streets you are about to experience the peaceful, positive vibes that comes after a disturbing work such as the last you heard."

Skinner added that the fifth and final record would be similar to Lou Reed's Berlin.

"The final Streets album (the fifth one) will be dark and futuristic. This could not be further from the album you're about to hear, but it's what is on my mind at the moment. I feel inspired by the synthesizer exhibition we just visited in Graz [Austria] after the gig we just did."

The pioneering power slow the surface of trip-hop, Massive Attack were among the most forward-looking and influential groups of their generation; their mesmerizing intelligent -- a in darkness sensual and cinematic fusion of rap rhythms, soulful melodies, knight grooves, and choice samples -- set the gait for a great deal of the dance medicine to emerge end-to-end the nineties, paving material the way for such acclaimed artists as Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Beth Orton, and Tricky, himself a Massive Attack alumna. Their history dates back to 1983 and the formation of the Wild Bunch, one of the earliest and most successful sound-system/DJ collectives to get in on the U.K. music aspect; illustrious for their seamless integration of a full range of musical styles, from punk to reggae to R&B, the group's parties rapidly became can't-miss events for the Bristol clubhouse crowd, and at the bloom of their popularity they drew crowds so tremendous that the local live music scene basically ground to a block.

When the Wild Bunch folded during the mid-'80s, two of its members -- Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles and Grant "Dada G" Marshall -- teamed with local graffiti artist 3D (born Robert del Naja) to form Massive Attack in 1987; some other Wild Bunch alum, Nellee Hooper, split his meter between the new group and his other stick out, Soul II Soul. The group's number 1 single, "Oneirism," appeared in 1990; it featured the sensual vocals of isaac M. Singer Shara Nelson and raps by Tricky, some other onetime Wild Bunch quisling. The classic "Unfinished Sympathy" followed, as did some other compelling effort, "Safe From Harm." Finally, in 1991 Massive Attack issued their debut LP, Blue Lines; piece by no substance a huge commercial success, the record was met with major critical praise, and was dubbed an exigent classical in many living quarters. Nelson, featured on many of the album's most memorable tracks, exited for a solo career shortly after, and the radical then bewilderingly changed their name to only "Massive" to debar whatsoever implication of favourable reception for the U.N.'s policy towards Iraq; in the wake of the fatal U.S. spell that followed, many were quick to write the band off right then and in that respect.

Afterwards a three-year layoff, Massive Attack -- their full name now the right way reinstated -- resurfaced with Auspices; again working with Hooper and Tricky, they besides brought into the plica singer Nicolette, as well as Everything merely the Girl's Tracey Thorn. Three singles -- "Karmacoma," "Guileful," and the statute title track -- were released from the LP, which was besides remixed in its totality by Mad Professor and issued as No Protection. A drawn-out tour of duty followed, and over the side by side several age, Massive Attack's solo put to work was principally confined to remixes for artists including Garbage; they besides worked with Madonna on a track for a Marvin Gaye tribute record album. Finally, to promote their appearance at the annual Glastonbury music festival, the group issued a new EP, Risingson, during the summer of 1997. The third full-length Massive Attack effort, First balcony, appeared in mid-1998; in add-on to reggae singer Horace Andy, making his third back-to-back LP appearance with the mathematical group, outspoken chores were handled by the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser and newcomer Sara Jay. Entresol became a cult strike among critics, clubs, and the college crowds, spinning successful singles such as "Teardrop" and "Inertia Creeps." A spell of America and Europe followed, merely Vowles left the dance band after disagreeing with the artistic direction of Mezzanine floor. Del Naja and Marshall continued as a duet, after working with the likes of David Bowie and the Dandy Warhols, merely Marshall later took a leave of absence to elevate his kin; producer Neil Davidge took up the slake. In February 2003, after a five-year wait, Massive Attack released their fourth record album, centesimal Window, including collaborations with lynchpin Horace Andy as well as Sinéad O'Connor. Danny the Dog from 2004 marked the group's entry into the world of soundtracks.
